The idea of a tanning salons, where people in their 50s and 60s can be paid a few dollars to apply wax to their skin is a familiar one, but this one in Sydney’s south-east is different.
It’s the first of its kind, offering people with no skin problems a place to put a little cash to pay for wax and shave.
For the past 12 years, the Sunshine State’s premier salon has been offering free treatments to anyone willing to pay.
“We’re always in need of people with skin issues and we need to help those who need help with that,” said owner, Dene Campbell.
“So for those who don’t have any skin problems, we can offer some of the best treatments that you’ve never seen before.”
So how does a person get a free wax?
Dene is keen to stress that she doesn’t sell wax.
“For a lot of people, we’ll have people coming in and say, ‘I don’t need wax, I want a free treatment’,” she said.
“I say, well, you’ve got your skin problem.
You have a lot to deal with and you need some help with your skin.”
Dene is one of many people who have benefited from the Sunshine Sunshine Sunshine Clinic, a local non-profit that offers free skin care, wax treatments and haircuts to those who are unable to afford it.
“When we started doing this, we didn’t know that there was so much demand for free treatment for people who are not able to afford them,” said Dene.
“Now we have over 1,000 people come to us every month.”
Diane Lee, a skin cancer survivor, is a fan of the Sunshine clinic and said she was surprised how many people came to her for help.
“It’s just fantastic,” she said of the free treatments.
“You don’t want to be able to come in and get it for free, so we do have a good amount of people come in every week for a free consultation.”
They’re very compassionate, very open to our skin and they’re very accepting of what we’re trying to do for them.
“My only issue with it is that it’s not necessarily in my skin, but I think it would be nice if we had more places like that in the community.”
A local beauty guru says the Sunshine clinics are the perfect fitFor some, the idea of having a free, convenient and affordable alternative to skin creams, treatments and salons is appealing.
“If you’ve had your nose or your lip done, it doesn’t feel right to have that extra money in your pocket and then having to spend an extra $20 to go to the salon for that,” local beauty specialist, Claire Lee said.
For Claire, a self-employed teacher, this is a way to save money on the spa she runs with her husband, but she also says the clinic is a perfect fit for her business.
“This is a good thing for our community because it’s an opportunity to get the services that we need,” she explained.
“As a business owner, I’m looking at people who want to get their hair done, they’re looking for a spa, they want to look their best, they don’t necessarily want to pay a lot.”
What they need is a safe and simple way to do it.
The Sunshine Sunshine clinic is run by volunteers, so the number of people who come to the clinic varies each week, but Claire said the number had gone up recently, and is up to 60 per cent since the program launched in March.””
It makes it so that they can actually do what they want and get the help that they need,” Claire said.

“In a few months we’ll be at capacity, but we’ve already had people coming for treatments,” she continued.
“People have been coming in to have their nose done, to have a lip job, their teeth done.”
That’s what we’ve been looking at.
“The thing that really struck me was the fact that there were people that had done so much and that were looking to make money off of their own skin.”
There’s people who had a nose job, there’s people that have had their teeth fixed, there are people that are just looking to earn some extra cash.
“It’s not just cosmetic treatments that people have found their way to the Sunshine sunshine clinic, but they have been using the clinic to also get their health to check up on their health and wellbeing.
Claire says she has seen patients who have undergone cosmetic procedures, or had skin treatments, which are in the form of skincare.”
These people come here for some skin care or some hair treatment,” Claire explained.
She said many people are seeking help with their skin condition and need some advice on what they can and cannot do
